“It is the race of the people. One may say that the whole of Italy leans forward with her eyes on the tarred strip of road somewhere along the course on Mille Miglia day. It is a day when I feel my life is useful.” This is Enzo Ferrari’s description of the original Mille Miglia.
Today’s retrospective event is only slightly less gruelling than the original that finished in a horrific blaze of publicity in 1957. Whether it’s the sheer effort of finding an acceptable car and gaining entry to this always over-subscribed event, or the relentless daily grind of timing checkpoints, floodlit midnight parades or banquets (that you will never get to…) driving the Mille Miglia is an experience like few others.
