2023 Monterey Week auctions: post-sales update

After we closed our reporting on this year’s auctions on the Peninsula, all four international firms announced several cars sold post-event, including RM’s 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider.

The ex-Targa Florio entry (pictured, above) is simply listed as ‘Sold After Auction’. We understand the final figure was ca. $8.5m to $8.9m, one of the lowest prices achieved by a SWB California Spider at public auction in the last 10 years. Blame open headlamps, time spent in the market and a varied history of colours and bodywork. At one stage it sported a badly executed faired-in-headlamp nose.

In post-sale dealing, the Canadians also sold the unfashionable today 1951 Ferrari 212 Inter 'Supergioiello' Coupé by Ghia ($950k) and the 1953 Fiat 8V Berlinetta by Zagato ($2.9m).

RM’s revised total for its three-day Monterey event in 2023 now stands at $155.5m at 86% sold by number.

Gooding & Co

Over at Gooding, the most significant car moved on after the event is the 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS, now declared sold at $925k. Its non-matching block and only average condition account for the price, though as an original US-delivered car in Argento/Nero with Borrani wires it has potential.

The 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet, a bespoke car with Superamerica-type side vents, also found an owner at $1.3m. Est. $1.5m to $2m.

These and a brace of other cars brings Gooding’s 2023 Pebble Beach total to $96.7m at 80% sold by number.

Bonhams

The Brits were working hard and had the 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta (above) sold for $3.9m by Saturday evening. With a few smaller-value entries, the Bond St firm’s total at Quail lodge in 2023 has risen to $55.5m at 74%.

Broad Arrow

New, Hagerty owned company Broad Arrow added eight cars to its list of sold offerings during Monterey Week in 2023. Several are listed as ‘Sold’, so we cannot add them to the total that now stands at $55.9m at 85%.
