$21.455m Aston Martin DP215 leads the pack at RM’s Friday auction

$21.455m Aston Martin DP215 leads the pack at RM’s Friday auction 24th August 2018

The surprise of the night? Everyone thought the ‘Project’ Aston Martin was too expensive, yet the pit crew on the telephones were more successful than the car racing in period.

Joining the green Aston on the podium was the famous gold Ford GT40 Mk II, which sold in the room for $9,795,000 with premium.

At a glance from provisional figures:

* Gross: $70,613,130
* Top-selling car: 1963 Aston Martin DP215, $21,455,000 gross, $19,500,000 net (est. $18m  $22m)

* Percentage of cars sold by number: 79%

While the Miura SV (above), at $2,177,500 with premium, seemed a buy, the price was probably right for that level of car on the night. As with Bonhams’ SWB, RM’s Ferrari 250 MM should have sold at the bidding level but the seller's expectations were higher than the market allowed. Other high-profile casualties were the Isotta and the Porsche 908: all will go home.

Few cars beat top estimate, but there were also few bargains to be had and, as with other sales, things went better than expected.
