Gooding set for $114m 2018 Pebble Beach sale

Gooding set for $114m 2018 Pebble Beach sale 25th August 2018

David Gooding’s team knocked the ball out of the park last night with the $22m Duesenberg SSJ. Today’s auction carried on the good work and we predict that the company’s overall gross of $91.6m in 2017 should be beaten by some $23m.

Top-selling car today was the delicious 1955 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder, finding a new home some way under low estimate but the lucky buyer must still find $5,170,000 incl. premium. And on that subject, Gooding remains the sole house of the Big Three in the US still to charge a flat 10% BP.

At a glance from provisional figures:

* Estimated gross over two days: $114,064,500 (2017 overall, $91,593,700)
* Percentage sold by number on the day: 82% (2017, 81%)
* Top-selling car: 1935 Duesenberg SSJ, $22,000,000 gross, $20,000,000 net (est. “In excess of $10m”)
* Well sold? Epic price on the ‘Duesie’ apart, the ultra-desirable (alloy block, discs) 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster ($1.8m to $2.2m) selling for $2.53m all-in shows the market's appetite for the best of the best
* Well bought? Back in 2014, when Toyota 2000GTs were selling for $1m, who’d have thought that within four years auctioneers would start them off at $300k? The red car sold today for $550k gross. Things have moved on
* One to take away? In overall quality, Gooding’s catalogue was the best in Monterey Week. Let’s plump for the 300 SL Roadster

In addition to the fine 300 SL Roadster, another car making waves today was the 1966 Porsche 911 Spyder prototype (below). Against a broad estimate of $700k to $1m, spirited bidding resulted in a hammer price of $1.3m. That’s $1.43m all-in.

The blue Ferrari 1950 166 MM/195 S Berlinetta Le Mans did not sell in the tent. But success did go the way of the yellow 1966 Ferrari Dino Berlinetta GT prototype: it sold well for $3,080,000.

While the saleroom thinned out towards the end of the event, the evergreen Charlie Ross was on top form: asking for a $40k bid on a Citroën, he quipped, “I think that’s quarante in French, madam, at least it was when I was at school...”
