K500 2015 sector analysis: Ferrari (Pre-1958) 10th January 2016

January 2015 693.59, December 2015 741.66.

The sector to beat, currently heading the K500 index after 21 years of results. While entries have been few and far between, the stand-out figure must be RM’s Monterey 1956 250 GT Tour de France-winner, the car that gave the model its name, which sold for $13.2m. An honourable mention should go to Gooding’s Pebble Beach 1957 410 Superamerica ($5.1m).

Earlier roadgoing Ferraris from this sector, unexciting to drive, heavy and often with less-than-glamorous coachwork, generally failed to shine. And six-million-dollar-plus, Series 1 250 GT Pininfarina Cabriolets probably peaked in August 2014.

Top: Terrific price of $13.2m for the very first 'Tour de France' 250 GT
