Yes, you read that right: last night in New York, auction house Phillips sold a 1968 Rolex Daytona bought new for the Hollywood star by his wife Joanne Woodward, for $17,752,500.
Although Newman was to own several Daytonas, this was his first and only ‘exotic’ dial model and carried the touching engraving ‘DRIVE CAREFULLY ME’ on its case-back.
It is the most valuable watch ever sold at auction and comfortably eclipses Bonhams’ Quail Lodge sale McLaren F1 ($15.62m) and Gooding’s $14.1m Gulf-Porsche 917K, another star of the silver screen, having featured in the Steve McQueen movie Le Mans.
