RM sells the final 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ for $2.4m in Las Vegas
At a star-studded charity event held on the eve of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, RM Sotheby’s sold the last-ever ‘Gullwing’ built for $2,400,000.
Billed as “The Last One”, chassis 198.040.7500079 was completed on 15 May 1957 as an ‘exhibition model’. Other than its rear axle, which has slight issues over numbering, all other components match. It was estimated at $2.5m to $3.5m. Ironically, for the very last example of one of its most iconic models, Mercedes in its wisdom chose a popular colour of the day, Fire Engine Red – the kiss of death in today’s market.
As it was a charity auction, no buyer’s premium applies.
The other cars sold on the night:
* 1994 Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer "Highlands Commission" (est. $1.25m to $1.5m) $1,225,000
* 2005 Porsche Carrera GT (est. $2m to $2.5m) $2,025,000
