Gooding to offer ‘Holy Grail’ pair of Mercedes 300 SLs at Pebble Beach

Gooding to offer ‘Holy Grail’ pair of Mercedes 300 SLs at Pebble Beach 6th June 2017

Interesting colour? Check. Single ownership from new? You bet. Unmolested? As far as we can see, yes. Even better, the two 300 SLs due to cross the block this August were ordered new by the same publishing executive and have shared garage space ever since.

The 1955 ‘Gullwing’, at $1.0 to $1.3m, comes in British Racing Green (DB 221) over tan leather. The 1957 Roadster is Silver-Blue Metallic (DB 353) over a grey leather interior with a parchment soft top, and is estimated at $800k to $1.0m.

Both cars are probably at the ‘restoration’ end of ‘recommissioning’, so will need extensive work. But for collectors looking for the real deal in terms of provenance, and presented in unusual and attractive colours, they have much to commend them. The estimates, too, are in the zone.
